FAQ’s
-
Yes. I accept commissions for a range of subjects including portraits, family members, pets, animals, landscapes and seascapes.
The best place to start is simply to get in touch and tell me what you have in mind.
What happens when I make a commission enquiry?
The first step is a conversation.
I will ask about your subject, the photograph or photographs you would like to use, the size you have in mind and the overall feel you are looking for.
We can then discuss composition, colour, size, timing and price before you decide whether to proceed.
-
For most commissions, yes. A good-quality reference photograph is an important starting point.
The photograph does not simply get copied onto the canvas. It is used as the foundation for creating an original painting, allowing elements such as composition, lighting, colour and atmosphere to be interpreted artistically.
If you have several photographs but are unsure which would work best, I am happy to discuss them with you.
-
Yes. Several reference photographs can sometimes be useful, particularly when creating a painting of a person, pet or group.
We can discuss which elements from the photographs should be incorporated into the final composition.
-
Yes. The commission process includes review points where we can discuss the development of the painting.
The aim is to agree the important elements of the composition and overall appearance early in the process, rather than waiting until the painting is finished.
-
A typical commission takes approximately 7–13 weeks, although larger or more complex paintings may take longer.
Oil painting is a layered process, and each stage requires time to develop and dry before the next can begin.
You will receive updates during the process so that you can see how the painting is developing.
-
There is no single price because every commission is different.
The final price depends primarily on the size, complexity and subject of the painting.
Indicative pricing is available on the commissions page, but the final price will be agreed with you before the commission begins.
-
Yes.
A 30–50% deposit, depending on the size and nature of the commission, is required to secure your commission and allow work to begin.
The remaining balance is payable once the painting is complete and approved, before shipping or collection.
-
Because a commissioned painting is created specifically for you, the process is different from purchasing an existing artwork.
The deposit covers the commitment to the project and the materials and preparation involved. Once work has commenced, deposits are non-refundable.
If you need to cancel a commission after work has started, any work completed up to that point may also be chargeable.
For this reason, we will agree the important details of the commission before work begins.
-
I specialise primarily in realistic oil painting, including:
Portraits
Family members
Pets and animals
Landscapes
Seascapes
Figures
I do not generally undertake graphic design, illustration, fantasy, anime or science-fiction commissions.
If you have something unusual in mind, however, feel free to ask. We can discuss whether it is something I can create.
-
Unless otherwise agreed, paintings are supplied unframed.
This allows you to choose a frame that complements both the artwork and its intended location.
-
Once the painting is complete, it is allowed time to dry and stabilise before the final finishing process.
It is then varnished, carefully packaged and prepared for delivery or collection.
Oil paintings continue to cure over a considerably longer period, even after they are touch-dry. This is a normal part of the nature of oil paint.

-
When you purchase an original painting, you own the physical artwork.
The intellectual property and copyright in the artwork remain with the artist unless a separate agreement has been made.
This means the painting is yours to enjoy, but commercial reproduction, licensing or use of images of the work for commercial purposes requires prior agreement.
The artist may also photograph completed work and use those images for portfolio, exhibition or promotional purposes.

If you are considering buying a painting or commissioning a piece but are not sure where to start, just get in touch.
You don't need to have everything worked out before contacting me. A conversation is often the best place to begin.
Tell me what you have in mind, and we can work out the rest together.
